I’ve got her head,” KC said. Trying not to stumble on the uneven snow, they lugged the woman to the van’s rear doors. It was a struggle, but they finally managed to shift her into the compartment. At one point, the woman let out a little moan. ” Dink said. He flipped on the flashlight and shone it onto the pile they’d left behind. The kids sat together in a bunch. Natasha plopped herself across KC’s legs. They watched Jo Payne, but the woman didn’t move an eyelash. Dink switched off the flashlight.
Marshall said. ” Then Natasha began barking again. ” Ruth Rose said. They all scrambled into the back of the van, leaving the doors open a crack behind them. There were no windows, but a little light came through the rear doors. Dink felt carpeting under his knees. His fingers felt pine needles, and the air smelled of them. Suddenly a tiny light went on. ” Josh asked. “It’s me,” Ruth Rose said. ” Using the small glow, the kids examined the crate. They heard Natasha’s nails scratching at the wood inside.
The man and woman climbed off their snowmobiles. Dink realized that they were not Ace and Jo Payne after all. The man was too short, for one thing. And his voice sounded young when he said, “Your dog is awesome. ” He was wearing some kind of padded snowsuit that zipped up the front. Ski goggles and a helmet covered most of his face. Only his eyes showed. Dink, Josh, and Ruth Rose were kneeling in the snow next to Natasha, who wasn’t moving. KC was stroking Natasha’s icy fur and whispering in her ear.
