Hank Rubin's quick decision on the library steps reflected less the impetuosity of youth than it did the sound realization, sadly proved prophetic, that Hitler meant to embroil Europe in war.

My suggestion met with unanimous opposition. I was a minority of one. Part of me enjoyed being the dissenter, the freethinker. But in some deeper part I was uncomfortable, feeling lonely and isolated, a reminder once again that wherever I went I seemed to be, if not quite an outsider, not quite a full member. After the meeting was over and all of those attending had left, the discussion leader of the evening asked the hostess if I was a member of the Young Communist League, apparently because I had sounded its theme.

But if the political power had shifted, the economic power had not, and those holding that power were united with the church and the army. The power elite regarded any attempt at reform as an aggressive challenge to their historical privilege and attacked all reform measures. While the new government was struggling to find a new concept of rule, the Republic was in serious economic straits. By 1933 there was 12 percent unemployment overall, and in the southern, agricultural part of the country that figure was nearer 20 percent.
